A regular car is suitable for many popular destinations in Argentina’s high desert, including Purmamarca and Salinas Grandes, where major routes are generally paved or well maintained. A 4×4 becomes a better choice when the itinerary includes remote Puna lagoons, rough gravel roads, or less-traveled high-altitude routes where conditions can change quickly after rain or other weather events.
